North East Football League Kilmessan Shield
Johnstown Football Club 6 - 1 Oldcastle United
(Photo by Mick Wall - NEFL)
A tough lesson thought last night as division one side Johnstown showed their class when beating Oldcastle United at the Mdl Grounds. Oldcastle went close in the ninth minute when Jason Scully fired a low shot towards goal and Cj Healy couldn't get a touch to it as it went wide. Six minutes later Johnstown took the lead when Wayne Cahill finished well when he looked slightly ahead of play. Oldcastle pushed forward looking to level and Thomas O Reilly shot wide and Ciaran Caffrey teed up Cj Healy with a chance at the back post but he volleyed his shot wide. Then disaster struck as Cahill grabbed his second of the match when he raced through to score. Cj Healy then seen a shot saved well by stand in keeper Kacper Zeberek. Just before halftime Cj Healy showed his skill beating two defenders but chipped his shot over the crossbar.
A minute into the second half Arron Mooney took adavntage of a defensive mix up to make it 3-0. Scully then seen a shot saved before Johnstown made it 4-0, Arron Mooney heading past Fitzsimons. With twenty minutes remaining Thomas O Reilly pulled a goal back for United. Despite battling and playing well, Johnstown finally killed off the game ten minutes remaining when Cahill grabbed his hat trick with a tidy shot to the back post. With five minutes remaining, Oldcastle were reduced to ten men when Eamon Boyle was shown red for a tackle and been last man, from the resulting free kick Fitzsimons saved well but Peter Dempsey was alert to fire home a sixth for Johnstown. Johnstown now advance to the next round of the Shield and we wish them the very best for the rest of the season.
